New Life | Low Life

After a long day, you walk home with neon signs glaring and street noise behind you. As you reach your building, push open the broken gate and walk up to the third floor to reach home - oh, not yet - after going in, you pass through a narrow corridor filled with random stuff; as you spot the stairs in low light, climb up, bend your body to sneak yourself into the space through the 0.5m x 0.5m hole - welcome home.

This is not another exotic Tokyo capsule hotel experience. It is a day in the life for thousands living in a metropolitan like Hong Kong. When apartments become so unaffordable and it takes almost 5 years go be allocated a council flat, some low-income residents turn to these 15 sq ft boxes known as "Coffin cubicles".

Gameplay:

Discussion is part of this print-and-play board game, which intends to raise the participants' awareness of poor living condition of the underprivileged and to prompt reflections about what make a space comfortable like home.  

1. The Game master will lead participants (at least 2) to discuss and determine which 10 necessary items to pick from a pool for their future home in a big city. 
2. The model of the coffin cubicle will  be presented to the participants, they will review their choices and filter the unfit ones. The challenging and harsh situation faced by the participants is part of the the boxed life.
3. The Game Master will show photos of coffin cubicles and guide the participants to identify the necessary household items found in these "homes", with a list of items is given as reference. 
4. Participants are encouraged to read further by accessing a micro-site with the QR code.
